Questions about the Furry Fandom

What is a furry?

A furry is a fan of anthropomorphic animals – that is, walking and talking animals. Often portrayed in art or costume creation, it’s a way of expressing interest in a hobby you enjoy – much like people into anime may like cosplay. It’s generally an all-ages community focused around self expression and artist creativity. There are multiple studies on furries, but a personal favorite of ours is written by Psychology Today.

Why are furries commonly misunderstood or even hated?

Furries tend to have quite a commonly misunderstood meaning in modern media. We’re no exception – we have our fair share of news about us. Furries in the news usually are perceived solely in an inappropriate or “deviant” nature, often leading the public image to sway towards the thoughts of furries being an inappropriate, sexually based subculture. This has led to a plethora of bad press, including a Tennessee Senator falsely claiming furries were given litter boxes in schools.

While the fandom may have adult-related settings in certain contexts, the majority of the Furry Fandom is a wholesome and appropriate community focused on expressing your creativity.

What is the correlation between the Furry Fandom and the LGBTQIA2S+ community?

Given that the Furry Fandom is a much more open and accepting community than most, the statistical rates for being LGBTQIA2S+ in the fandom are much higher than normal communities observe. It is estimated that in an international online study conducted by FurScience, only 10.1% of individuals answered as “Heterosexual or Straight”.

Furries are already publicly known for breaking the norm when it comes to self-expression, so this naturally attracts the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Our community itself even participated in Pride!
